The Tyrrhenian Cycle Route in Liguria

The Tyrrhenian Cycle Route is a series of safe cycling paths in Liguria, running from Ventimiglia to Sarzana and spanning almost 460 km along the region’s coastline
Liguria is a region just waiting to be explored by bike!
Roads suspended between sea and sky, secret villages, olive groves, and headlands overlooking the bright blue sea: cycling in Liguria is not just a means of transport, it is a way to explore and marvel.
Cycling is the most authentic way to follow the rhythm of this vertical, narrow, wonderful land—one that reveals its beauties to those who know how to slow down. Whether you are a keen cyclist or simply a curious traveller in search of new experiences, Liguria will welcome you with an ever-expanding network of cycle paths, unforgettable landscapes, and an outdoor cultural and natural heritage to be enjoyed all year round. The ambitious Tyrrhenian Cycle Route fits seamlessly into this context, crossing the entire coastline in a combination of beauty, sustainability and soft mobility.

The Tyrrhenian Cycle Route: a nation-wide project
Established in 2016 as part of Italy’s National System of Tourist Cycle Routes, the Tyrrhenian Cycle Route is one of ten major such routes promoted by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of Culture. The goal? To create safe, accessible, high-quality cycle routes that enhance Italy’s cultural, historical and environmental heritage. A project designed for everyone – from experienced cyclists to occasional travellers – which aims to turn the bicycle into an instrument of discovery and sustainable growth.
The national system, which is still being completed, runs for about 870 kilometres from Ventimiglia to Rome, following the coastline and crossing three regions, namely Liguria, Tuscany and Lazio: a ‘view onto the Mediterranean’ that represents both an extraordinary tourist opportunity and a complex design challenge, given the coexistence of urban areas, infrastructures, heritage sites and environmental constraints.

Tyrrhenian Cycle Route in Liguria: 460 km of sea, villages and nature
In Liguria, the Tyrrhenian Cycle Route covers about 460 km, from Ventimiglia to Sarzana, embracing the region’s entire coastal arc. It runs along old disused railways, existing cycle paths and low-traffic road sections, offering cyclists a continuous alternation of nature, culture and unforgettable views.
From West to East, the Ligurian cycle route touches on a succession of wonders: starting from Ventimiglia, on the border with France, it takes in the splendid, coast-hugging West Liguria Cycle Path, which crosses Sanremo and the Riviera of Flowers, allowing you to discover the charming inlets of Imperia, the medieval atmospheres of Savona, the historical grandeur of Genoa, the two magical bays of Sestri Levante, the stunning Cinque Terre, and continue all the way to La Spezia!
All the sections which are currently open for use offer immersive and accessible experiences, in line with a vision of sustainable and inclusive mobility. In addition to being an important infrastructure for tourism, the Cycle Route also has the merit of offering a concrete alternative to everyday mobility and of serving as a growth lever for local communities.
