Discovering Bussana Vecchia, the ghost village

Just outside Sanremo there is a place where time has stood still. In 1887, a severe earthquake destroyed almost all the houses in Bussana, an ancient Ligurian village, and claimed many victims among the worshippers gathered in the church for a religious service. For about 70 years, the old village was abandoned and was rebuilt further down the valley, Bussana Nuova. However, in the 1960s, a community of artists and craftsmen from all over Italy and Europe renovated some of the buildings and their studios can still be found there today. A trip to Bussana Vecchia is a plunge into the village’s memory, providing continuous surprises with artistic installations and corners full of mystery and charm.
