The Olympic Torch Relay arrives in Liguria

The Olympic Torch Relay will be in Liguria on Friday 9 and Saturday 10 January 2026, a historic moment celebrating the arrival of the Olympic flame in Liguria, ahead of the Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympic Games.

The Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympic Torch Relay is not just a symbol of unity and sporting passion; it is also a chance to explore the wonders of our country. This year, Liguria will have the honour of hosting a key stage of this iconic relay, with the Olympic Torch passing through Genoa, the beating heart of the region.

The Olympic Torch Relay

The Olympic Torch Relay is an event that always precedes the Olympic Games, when the flame, a symbol of unity and peace, travels across the host country, touching cities, regions and symbolic places on a long and fascinating journey. Each stage is a chance to celebrate and involve the local communities, and brings with it the excitement of the forthcoming Games. The torch’s itinerary is not only a physical journey but also a symbolic one that unites the whole of Italy ahead of the Games.

The journey towards Milano-Cortina 2026 will begin at the historic site of Mount Olympus, in Greece, on 26 November 2025, with the lighting of the torch, which will then arrive in Rome on 4 December, where it will begin its journey two days later. From Rome, the torch will cross the country for 63 days, passing through some of Italy’s most iconic cities and sites. Each stage, including Genoa, will have its moment of celebration and involvement of the locals, with thousands of people gathering to watch the symbol of the Olympic Games pass by.

The Olympic Torch Relay in Liguria begins on Friday 9 January 2026 in Riomaggiore and Manarola, in the heart of the Cinque Terre, moving along a route that skirts the sea and the hills, showcasing the beauty and sporting vocation of the region. After passing through La Spezia, Lavagna, Chiavari, Rapallo and Portofino the torch will reach Genoa, the “Superba”, which will welcome it in the narrow alleys of the old town and the impressive Porto Antico designed by Renzo Piano.

Genoa is one of the most inspiring and fascinating stages of the journey. The Ligurian city, one of the main stages of this relay, will welcome the torch on Friday 9 January 2026. The passage of the torch through Genoa is not only a moment of celebration for the city, but also a showcase for the whole of Liguria, an opportunity to promote its rich history, culture and natural beauty in the run-up to the 2026 Olympic Games.

On 10 January, the journey continues to Savona, a city with strong ties to the sea, then on to Imperia, land of oil and sailing, and, finally, to Sanremo, the “City of Flowers” and great sporting tradition. Before leaving Liguria, the Torch will pass through Dolceacqua and Ventimiglia, carrying with it the spirit and colours of a region that blends nature, history and passion.
