More than 50 autographed paintings, works from 32 museums in 22 cities across Europe: from the Louvre in Paris, to the Prado in Madrid, to the National Gallery in London: Palazzo Ducale will host the largest monographic exhibition on the Flemish painter Anthony Van Dyck in the last 25 years.
In the rooms of the Doge’s Apartment and of the beautiful Doge’s Chapel, an exhibition will be set up in various sections with a storytelling that will recount the growth and development of Van Dyck’s art in the three key cities of his career: Antwerp, Genoa and London.
On display are two youthful self-portraits; portraits of elegant ladies from Genoa, Antwerp, and England; works commissioned by King Charles I of England; captivating mythological work and intense religious works, immersing visitors in the magical creative world of a genius. Three paintings by Rubens, Van Dyck’s master, will be presented for comparison in the wake of the exceptional success of the Rubens exhibition in Genoa in 2022.

Who was Anthony Van Dyck

Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641) was a Flemish painter and the first court painter in England, best known for his elegant portraits, particularly those of the Genoese nobility and of Charles I of England. A pupil and assistant of Rubens, his style was influenced by his formative trip to Italy, where he studied Renaissance masters such as Titian. He stayed for four years in Genoa where he portrayed the aristocracy (the same as the Palazzi dei Rolli) and became renowned for his ability to render subjects with a relaxed elegance, influencing English portraiture for generations.
