Four truly special Ligurian museums
Four Ligurian museums that, through special accessibility and inclusion projects, have improved their visitor experience.
Castello D'Albertis
Castello D'Albertis is the house that Captain Enrico Alberto D'Albertis built for himself in the Neo-Gothic style in 1932 after a life spent traveling the world and collecting souvenirs, ethno-anthropological artifacts, objects, clothes, trophies, and musical instruments from far-off lands that today captivate visitors. Due to its unique features and involvement in many inclusion projects, it has also become the perfect "home" for everyone, including people with disabilities. At Castello D'Albertis, all the conditions for a stimulating and rewarding visit are present: the rooms are well-lit, free from background noise, and never overcrowded. In some cases, you can touch the objects, perceive their scents, and follow and produce sounds and videos. Thanks to the Accessit project, a 3D model of the Castle and its location in the territory has been created for tactile exploration accompanied by an audio guide. The Sensorial installation (created for the Museo per tutti project) combines multisensory stimulation and relaxation through listening to music and its vibrations, using special musical instruments for touch and hearing, images for visual sense, and scents for smell.
Museo di Storia naturale “G. Doria”
The "G. Doria" Natural History Museum of Genoa is the oldest museum in Genoa and tells the story of the Earth. It houses a vast scientific collection comprising four and a half million specimens and artifacts from all over the world, including animals, fossils, plants, and minerals. An ancient theme is presented in a new way: the "G. Doria" Natural History Museum keeps up with the times and today's technologies. Its "Cetacean Room," redesigned in 2017 for the museum's 150th anniversary, now offers a new visitor experience with a multisensory path accessible to everyone, including visitors who are visually impaired or blind. There are several life-size 3D models of common dolphin, Risso's dolphin, bottlenose dolphin, pilot whale, and dolphin, which can be touched to appreciate the shapes and sizes of the most common species of the Ligurian Sea. Through six QR codes placed at the beginning of the exhibit and near the 3D models, visitors can access detailed information on the morphology, anatomy, and behavior of the most common species in our sea, including the sounds emitted by individual species.
MUSA di Savona
The Savona Ceramic Museum documents a ceramic tradition spanning over six centuries in Savona and Albisola. It is part of the circuit of the Civic Museums of Savona. Ceramics is a versatile and creative material, and the best way to enjoy the MUSA is to participate in the workshops and courses organized by the museum's educational service in collaboration with the main social and health organizations in the area. These activities are designed to introduce art through mediation tools tailored to different abilities, thereby overcoming physical and cognitive challenges.
CAMeC della Spezia
The CAMeC was established in 2004 to host artistic collections from the Premio del Golfo editions and donations from Cozzani and Battolini. Today, it hosts exhibitions and installations by Italian and international artists. Contemporary art knows no boundaries, including disability. The goal of CAMeC – Centro Arte Moderna e Contemporanea della Spezia is for every visitor to fully enjoy the art without any limitations. To achieve this, CAMeC has been equipped with various tools for disabilities: a totem with a video in Italian Sign Language (LIS) that tells the story of the museum and its collections, and a new Accessibility Room. This spacious exhibit area combines original works with 3D casts or replicas that can be touched. It is available to all visitors but is specifically designed for those with visual and hearing impairments to break down perceptual and sensory barriers.
