La Spezia Gulf Palio

The La Spezia Gulf Palio is one of the main summer events in Liguria.

It takes place every year on the first Sunday in August in the waters of the Gulf. It is a race between 13 historical Borgate (villages) that compete in oar races on extraordinary boats, handmade by local shipwrights.

On Friday evening, the Palio is preceded by the colourful and lively traditional parade of boats, their crews and hundreds of figures on floats through the streets of the city.

On Saturday, the boats are weighed to verify that the hulls are within the strict specifications assigned to them, under penalty of disqualification.

On Sunday, the races kick off, involving crews in three different categories: Women’s, Senior and Junior.
