Piana Crixia Park

Piana Crixia Park

The park you’ll encounter in Piana Crixia, on the border with the Langhe, is by no means large. But it’s also a place rich in wonders, like the one that made it famous and will leave you lost for words: the 15-metre-tall “Stone Mushroom”, one of the most distinctive geological phenomena of the Liguria-Piedmont area. The natural monument consists of a large ophiolitic boulder supported by a detritus column shaped by erosion.

On around the 10th August, Er Mange' D'na Vota takes place, an event celebrating Piana Crixia’s rustic past through traditional dishes: polenta, fried ravioli, boiled meat, and breads.

Strolling in nature

The gentle cultivated slopes around the village of Piana Crixia afford a stunning view of woods and lavender fields. You’ll follow timeless trails, at times interrupted abruptly by gullies, evocative features created by erosion. A landscape overflowing with contrasts will open up before your very eyes: flat areas, used by mankind for farming since time immemorial, alternating with steep ridges.

The Park has created a new camper van area in Pontevecchio, at the junction of provincial roads 29 and 30. Five bays are available, with free seasonal opening from 15 March to 15 October. There is also a playground and picnic area just 200 metres away.

The Creste path

Follow the trail to explore the gullied landscape, made up of narrow branching valleys and bare slopes continuously eroded by rainwater. When you arrive at the hamlet of Borgo you’ll find yourself standing before the Stone Mushroom. It seems impossible that the tall column of cemented pebbles can bear the weight of the gigantic boulder on top.

The Piana Crixia 'mushroom' is the subject of local legends, in particular the one according to which Napoleon was so interested in this natural monument that he wanted to move it to France.

Nougat and truffle

You can buy famous Piana Crixia nougat in one of the little village shops: this rustic product is made with hazelnuts, eggs, honey, flour and sugar. The Nougat Festival has been celebrated on 8 December since the mid
