From September 1 to 8, 2024, top-tier tennis will take center stage in Genoa with the AON Open Challenger – Memorial Giorgio Messina, celebrating its 20th anniversary.
The AON Open Challenger – Memorial Giorgio Messina is a prestigious international tennis tournament that will bring some of the leading figures in both Italian and international tennis to the shadow of the Lanterna. On the various courts of Valletta Cambiaso, ATP-ranked athletes will compete on clay, offering Genoa an unmissable week of sports.
Top-tier tennis in Genoa
Organised since 2003, the tournament is dedicated to Giorgio Messina, the historic President of the Tennis Club Genova and the Ligurian Regional Committee of the Italian Tennis Federation (FIT). Messina played a significant role in elevating the level of tennis in Liguria and inspiring an ever-growing number of people to take up the sport. Over its 20-year history, the tournament has attracted numerous top tennis players, including Jannik Sinner (in 2019), Lorenzo Musetti (in 2019), Matteo Arnaldi, Matteo Berrettini, and Lorenzo Sonego, who has won the tournament twice. The AON Open Challenger – Memorial Giorgio Messina is one of the main events of Genoa 2024 – European Capital of Sport. Notable past champions include the Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas, Lorenzo Sonego, and Fabio Fognini. This Genoa Challenger has, year after year, solidified the city of Fabrizio De André as an increasingly important tennis hub in Europe and around the world.
The AON Open Challenger 2024
The upcoming edition of the AON Open Challenger – Memorial Giorgio Messina is set to be a record-breaking event. From September 1 to 8, the clay courts of Valletta Cambiaso will host a top 70 player, two top 80 players, and eight of the top 150 players in the world. Among the participants is Kei Nishikori from Japan, a former world No. 4 and winner of 12 ATP titles, along with seven Italian players and other prominent names fresh from the US Open.
