Pesto World Championship basil: origins and trivia

Family Food

Discovering a world-class pesto. The journey through the greenhouses of Celle Ligure provides an in-depth insight into the origin of basil. Here, overlooking the sea, they cultivate the basilico plant that is the symbol of Liguria, and Società Agricola Calcagno Paolo is the official supplier of the Pesto World Championship, taking place every two years with participants from five continents and a final at Palazzo Ducale in Genoa.

How long does basil take to grow, how does it develop, what are the main characteristics about its quality: these are some of the questions that will be addressed during the itinerary through the Cellesi hills about the real Genovese dop basil.

Thanks to his decades of experience in the field, the owner, Paolo Calcagno, together with his collaborators, will help visitors appreciate unknown aspects of farm production: from a special boiler providing energy for the greenhouses to the sales stages. In addition to the certified pesto, you will also enjoy tastings of local products.
