Antola Park – The Villages

Antola Park – The Villages

Crystal-clear lakes, wild rivers, ghost towns that have remained the same as they were three hundred years ago, and then castles and Art Nouveau villas. All immersed in a beautiful nature rich in colours, which become dazzling and unique in autumn when the forests turn red and yellow. This is the territory of Mount Antola, between the two valleys of the Scrivia and Trebbia rivers, which gives its name to the oldest park in Liguria.

Reach the Parco dell'Antola, in the municipality of Casella, by taking the historic “little train” from the centre of Genoa. A sustainable journey through history and nature.

Scrivia Valley

In the Scrivia Valley, you cannot miss the rural culture and architecture of the Valbrevenna. Do not miss Casella, the terminus of a narrow gauge railway, a valley commercial centre with a beautiful sports centre and a well equipped swimming pool for the summer. Many towns are famous for their trattorias, always serving genuine products, while Busalla is home to the famous Birreria. A visit to Vobbia Castle, a massive and mysterious fortress in the village of the same name, is a must.

The history of the Fieschi family combines many valleys, trails and historic buildings in Liguria. The Fieschis were one of the most important feudal noble families of the Republic of Genoa. They were Guelphs like the Grimaldis, while the Spinola and D'Oria were Ghibellines. The Fieschis originally came from the Levante hinterland, and they had their main base in the area of Tigullio and Val Fontanabuona up to Val d'Aveto.

Trebbia Valley

The other wilder valley is the Trebbia. Unspoilt nature around Lake Brugneto. Torriglia is home to the Fieschi Castle, Montebruno is also worth visiting for its Sanctuary. The small villages such as Fascia and Rondanina, Propata and Gorreto, Rovegno and Fontanigorda, where you can find the Liguria of the Apennines and at least one trattoria, are a dive into the rural past. The rural gem of Pentema with its famous nativity scene is worth seeing.

In the Antola Park territory there are 36 local products included in the list of Traditional Food Products (PAT), established by the Ministry of Agriculture.

Canestrelli biscuits

The canestrello is a gastronomic flagship of Liguria, born five centuries ago in Torriglia. There are six old bakeries and they package the cake in six different ways. The base is always the simple one with high quality butter, flour, egg yolks and sugar. What makes the sometimes imperceptible difference are the so called secret ingredients. The result is, however, always unique: impossible to resist.
