From the moment you arrive, Ceriale's ornate promenade will seem like the ideal place to enjoy the sea and everything it has to offer: the beach, above all, but also the bars, cute little eateries and well-maintained bathing facilities. In the Middle Ages, small coasters exported citrus fruits, large quantities of hemp, dried beans and various cereals from Ceriale, as well as a traditional breed of small mule. All these were sold at a good price at the coastal markets in France.
An ancient history
Ceriale was founded by the Romans when they built the Via Julia Augusta road. The town will reveal the traces of its past to you, each one a badge of honour: the parish church of Saints John the Baptist and Eugene in the old town centre, the circular tower built to defend the city from pirate raids, and the Museum of Palaeontology. Everything is worth a visit.
In the museum of palaeontology you’ll find a state of the art optical microscope that allows macroscopic observation of rocks and analysis of thin sections, so you can see for yourself the processes by which fossils are extracted and prepared for study.
Le Caravelle
Ceriale is also home to Liguria's one and only, muchloved water park. With 80,000 square metres all yours to explore, come and enjoy the water slides, super fun water games and the huge swimming pool with artificial waves. All you need for the time of your life is your swimwear and an appetite for fun.
Legend has it that Ceriale was named after the goddess Ceres because, at the time of the Roman rule, a great deal of wheat was grown in the area.
The nature reserve
While in Ceriale, you can also explore the Rio Torsero Nature Reserve, just over a kilometre from Ceriale’s beaches. It’s known to Italian and foreign scholars for its richness in numbers and species and the extraordinary state of conservation of the Pliocene fossils. You’ll be amazed at the myriad mollusc shells embedded in the rocks.
