Toirano town

Toirano town

Seventy limestone caves created by underground rivers that have slowly retreated over the millennia forming exceptional scenic effects. Large underground rooms, with stalactites and stalagmites of all sizes. Very rare crystal flowers. This is how the Toirano caves are presented, among the most spectacular in the world. A gift of nature, which has worked undisturbed for centuries. A gift open to the public in 1953, when for the first time the 1280 metres of tunnels and atmospheres became one of the great attractions in Liguria. Toirano is outside, another jewel, but this time in the open air;an ancient and charming village of the western Ligurian Riviera, with its medieval walls, tower houses, moats, doors, loggias and a beautiful, timeless bridge.

The oldest area of the Borgo di Toirano is called “Turaccu” (Italianised as “Toracco”). In medieval Latin it means “tower foot”

Bears and ancestors

Every year many visitors venture into the enchanted landscape of the caves of Basura and Santa Lucia Inferiore. The prehistoric bear lived here underneath, but you can also admire the signs left by “grizzly” nails. The corridor of the footprints bears the most striking discovery: the footprints left by Neanderthal man.

The Toirano area, with its caves, is the scene of many legends and one in particular: that of the “Buranco” of the Varatella stream, a deep chasm that is said to be one of the gates of the Underworld.

Open air Toirano

The historical events in the town are highlighted by the architectural works in the area. Next to the caves stands the Sanctuary of Santa Lucia. From here, you can enjoy a splendid view of Val Varatella. You can start your itinerary here to discover the ancient village of Toirano: the parish church, whose bell tower reveals its defensive function in medieval times, Giare Bridge with its three arches and Carretto Palace, hosting the local museum in its stables.

Since 2006, Toirano has been an Italian Touring Club Orange Flag.

The Festa dei Gunbi (dialect name of the oil mills)

takes place on the 1st week of August. In the evening the winery of the historic center open, and you can taste many local specialties: farinata, panizza, michettin / fried bread, sbirulini, breadsticks covered with bacon, battered vegetables, peaches with Pigato.
