Trebbia Valley

Easy to reach, half an hour's drive from Genoa, this beautiful and wild valley that runs between the provinces of Genoa and Piacenza along the watercourse from which it was named after, is waiting to be discovered. In 1895, 16teen year old Albert Einstein left Munich, heading first to Pavia and then to Genoa, where an uncle of his lived. He crossed the Trebbia Valley on foot, passing through the areas of Fascia, Rondanina, Montebruno and Propata: a stretch now known as the 'Albert Einstein Road'.

On the banks of the Brugneto lake

You can start your journey from this large reservoir, below the peaks of the Antola and Prelà mountains. Here you can admire the clear waters of the reservoir, where you can also enjoy wonderful excursions. The trail begins with a flat section that runs almost at the same level as the lake, from which in flood periods you can admire trees with their roots immersed in the water.

Gorreto, the last village before the border with Emilia, is home to the great Palazzo Centurione: this 17th-century building features a crenellated tower and characteristic black and white bands. It was used for commercial activities or to administer justice, and even housed the mint.

Fantastic forests

In Rovegno, taking a short hike through the woods, you can reach the famous 'Hannibal's Wood' and the sacred area, where there is a dolmen, a megalithic tomb dating back to prehistoric times. In the small hamlet of Loco, where the famous poet Giorgio Caproni was buried, you can relax in the Giaia forest, where there are also several sports facilities. In Fontanigorda, you will find the Bosco delle Fate (Fairy Wood) a few hundred metres from the town hall square: it is a magical, well maintained place, rich in pure water springs and with equipped sports areas.

The Trebbia river, one of the cleanest in Italy, is a paradise for freshwater fishermen. You'll also find a fishing reserve here, in a truly unique setting. Fish are of good size and quality, and tourist and reception facilities are second to none.

Canestrello biscuits

In Torriglia, you can taste the famous canestrello made in the best pastry shops. Don't get lost in the streets of the ancient village, and follow the path towards the ancient castle that was home to the Malaspina, the Fieschi and then the Doria families. Or you can enjoy picnic time on the large, clean lawns of the Prince's Park.

Pentema is a village whose origins date back to the 16th century. It is located ten kilometres from Torriglia, at an altitude of 827 metres. In December and January, it hosts the famous nativity scenes spread throughout the village and in the homes, with human-sized figures and settings.

In Montebruno

In addition to the rural art museum of the Upper Trebbia Valley, in Montebruno you can visit the beautiful sanctuary, where you can admire interesting frescoes from the 16th century.
