Varigotti town

Varigotti town

The first advice is to arrive at sunset, possibly at the end of a clear day. It is the ideal condition to enjoy the unique image of Varigotti’s pastel-coloured houses reddened by the sun. Something unique worth a trip alone in this beautiful and famous seaside village, also defined the "Saracen hamlet". Today, Varigotti lies in the Municipality of Finale, but for many centuries it was an autonomous town with its own well-defined identity. Varigotti Castle remains of that past, in a dominant position, built with the ruins of the Byzantine castrum well before the year 1000.

Varigotti was part of the Byzantine military system in Maritime Liguria and is among the civitas destroyed by Rotari in the conquest of 642/643.

Beaches and coves

The medieval ruins arising on the headland bear witness to the historic past of this town, while the fantastic “Saracen Bay” beach is testimony to the tourist and seaside vocation that make Varigotti a unicum: surrounded by rocky cliffs and wild nature. Punta Crena beach is also beautiful, which can only be reached by sea. Locals have always called it the “spiaggetta” or cove: white, with the finest sand.

The Pilgrim’s path

There are also fascinating trails starting from the sea, which are much loved by trekking enthusiasts. For example, the

Camillo Sbarbaro described it this way: “Saracen dwellings claim near the sand and the palm;and a foretaste of Africa is foreshadowed in this glint of lime and in the glass of air”.

Paragliding

In Varigotti, you can try your hand at paragliding, starting from the Manie plateau and landing directly on the beach. Flying over this beautiful village, you will discover Varigotti from another point of view and experience a unique opportunity.
