Why Visit Aveto Park
The wild side alongside the human side, the beauty of nature fully accessible to everyone.
Manes caressed by the wind. Galloping across the meadows. Young foals following their mothers. These are the wild horses of Aveto Park! These are horses of domestic origin who, after their last owner disappeared around 20 years ago, have adapted and reproduced in the wild. It’s not too difficult to spot them in their natural environment: around Lake Giacopiane, the park organises many horse-watching events.
If observing isn’t enough for you, you can get up close and personal with their cousins: the donkeys! At the La Ghianda farm, you can meet these intelligent animals and spend an afternoon with them. To experience the shepherd’s way of life, explore the pastures along the trails of Monte Aiona. At the IAT in Borzonasca, a permanent exhibition tells the story of these ancient activities.
The plants in Aveto Park, due to its alpine-type mountain location and proximity to the sea, are rare and surprising: discover them all at the Federico Delpino Botanical Garden or at the Forest Museum, where you can learn about the entire ecological system, the history of the park’s forests, and the work and tools used, which are part of the local identity. The habitats of the glacial lakes are truly unique, with waters collected in the basins of ancient glaciers, such as Lake of the Firs in the Agoraie Nature Reserve, which owes its name to the fossil trunks of Silver Fir lying on the bottom and still visible today.
A church immersed in nature, lost in a mystical atmosphere: the Abbey of Borzone, surrounded by greenery and nestled among small ancient settlements, is the ideal place for reflection beyond the everyday. The Borzone Loop connects this site to the “Face of Christ,” a rock that resembles the likeness of the Savior, and to the abandoned little church of San Martino, forming a spiritual trail to be experienced with an open heart.
A park accessible for all
The Aveto Park is an accessible park: many paths have been specially identified for people with disabilities, and the various accommodation facilities, visitor centres, and educational areas are accessible to everyone, such as the Bosco Giardino Botanico Federico Delpino and the Sentiero Natura del Laghetto del Bocco.
