Lucia di Lammermoor at Carlo Felice Theatre
Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor at the Carlo Felice, from Friday 15 to Sunday 24 November 2024.
Donizetti’s gothic drama will be staged at the Carlo Felice Theatre in Genoa from Friday 15th to Sunday 24th of November. This opera, of extraordinary cohesion and great emotional impact, was first performed on 26 September 1835 at the San Carlo Theatre in Naples and quickly became one of the key archetypes of 19th-century opera.
The Plot
It is the story of the ill-fated love between Lucia and Edgardo, the sole heir of the Ravenswood family, whose lands have been usurped by the Ashton family, to which Lucia and her brother Enrico belong. The story takes place in Scotland at the end of the 16th century and is based on the novel The Bride of Lammermoor by Walter Scott. The narrative is rich in melodramatic elements: the war (with the famous aria “Verranno a te sull’aure i miei sospiri ardenti”), the madness of love (as seen in Lucia’s aria “Al giunger tuo soltanto, fia bello il ciel per me”), leading to the final tragedy (“L’universo intero è un deserto per me senza Lucia”).
