Savona, the Good Friday procession
This is perhaps the most heartfelt moments for the people of Savona and the oldest and most evocative event in the city.
The Good Friday procession, which takes place in even-numbered years and will fall on 15 April in 2022, takes on special and unique aspects, for an incredible spectacle of religiosity and art. The ceremony has been held and paraded through the streets of the city centre since the end of the 13th century. The procession dates back to the medieval tradition of public flagellations (the discipline). Today, the various confraternities carry so-called ‘chests’ in procession, which are true works of devotional art. The procession is an impressive moment that attracts thousands of people.
