Two villages, two castles: on the Via del Sale (Salt Road) from Zuccarello to Castelvecchio di Rocca Barbena
This excursion gives you the chance to get to know Liguria while staying off the beaten tourist track, a walk that combines two enchanting villages and two evocative castles. The marked path leading to the ruins of Zuccarello Castle starts from the centre of the village. You can see from the outside what remains of the castle where Ilaria Del Carretto, daughter of the Marquis of Zuccarello, was born. The village of Castelvecchio di Rocca Barbena is structured in a circular fashion and is perched on a rocky spur and overlooked by the huge feudal castle built by the Clavesana family and owned for a long period by the Del Carrettos. When you reach the centre, you can enjoy a stroll through the narrow, winding alleys, untouched for a thousand years, and sit on a bench in the pretty Piazza della Torre, also known as ‘dell’impiccato’.The return road is a section of the ancient Via del Sale (Salt Road), on which slow caravans once travelled carrying salt from the coast to the hinterland.
