La Spezia town
Today, La Spezia is a city for tourists to discover, with a restructured and pedestrianised city center, an elegant seaside promenade overlooking the Gulf of Poets, along with theatres, museums and shopping opportunities. A city that has managed to change its look. With gems such as the Arsenale and the Naval Museum of the Navy - one of the oldest in the world - that safeguards relics and mementos from navigation, exploration, battles, scientific experiments, inventions and innovations.

Castello di San Giorgio and the works of the Lia Museum
The calling card of Spezia is the Castello di San Giorgio. This fortress is comprised of two buildings from different eras. Of note is the capital's museum heritage, with the Centre for Modern and Contemporary Art and the Lia Museum, housing a splendid collection including a Raphael and a Sebastiano del Piombo. Then there is the Formentini Archaeological Museum, the Cathedral of Cristo Redentore, the Parish Church of San Venerio, found in the Migliarina district and dedicated to the hermit monk who died on the island of Tino.
The Gulf of La Spezia was first called the Golfo dei Poeti (Gulf of Poets) by the playwright Sem Benelli, who - in a villa overlooking the sea at San Terenzo - worked on his masterpiece “La cena delle beffe” (The Mockery Dinner).
The thousand stalls
A city for shopping, with its elegant stores in the centre. Then, on 19th March each year, La Spezia hosts a fair that has no equal in Liguria, the region’s oldest and hosting some thousand stalls.
Mesciua is one of the oldest dishes in La Spezia's culinary history: it is prepared with legumes and cereals chosen at random.
“Muscoli” and coquillage
Mussel farming in the Gulf of Poets has an ancient history whilst the mussels, which in Liguria we call ‘muscoli’, are cultivated in front of the city using historic methods that ensure local production is maintained. Yet it is the newest variety to the area to truly make the mouth water, the oysters grown in the Gulf of La Spezia that have conquered gourmands and experts alike thanks to their excellent quality.
