Millesimo town
Liguria is surprising because within a radius of about thirty kilometres, you go from the beaches of Savona to a totally different landscape. Millesimo, runner-up in the 2022 edition of 'Il Borgo dei borghi', is a village in the Val Bormida, not far from Lake Osiglia. The symbol of the city is its Ponte della Gaietta, one of the few fortified bridges in Italy, under which the Bormida River flows. The recently restored Castle of the Marchesi del Carretto has dominated and watched over the safety of the village from on high for more than eight centuries.

Just outside the village is the beautiful old Romanesque parish church of Santa Maria Extra Muros from the 1100s, which houses 16th-century frescoes and a large immersion baptismal font.
Wandering between churches and palaces
Clearly separated from the modern town, the old village can be visited comfortably, entering through the Ponte della Gaietta bridge with its watchtower. Lose yourself in this atmosphere of bygone days: the porticoes, the old town hall, the church of Sant'Antonio Abate and the hexagonal Church of San Rocco. If you are a history buff, you must visit the interesting Napoleonic Museum in Villa Scarzella, surrounded by a magnificent garden.
The most famous cave is the 'Tana dra vurp' or Fox's Den, more than 200 metres deep and inhabited since the Bronze Age.
The Bric Tana Park
The territory of the municipality of Millesimo also includes the Bric Tana Regional Park, which is very important from a geological point of view, consisting of forest covered hillsides where small mammals live, and is rich in karst features. Large dolinas (funnel shaped cavities in the ground through which rainwater penetrates the subsoil) with sinkholes, caves, gorges and small blind valleys such as the Valley of the Three Kings constitute a magical and fascinating environment.
Don't miss the delicious National Truffle Festival in September, with the classic and entertaining competition between truffle hunters.
Gastronomic treasures
A heart of cocoa, rum and chocolate covered meringue. Millesimini are a sweet gastronomic treasure whose secret recipe is jealously guarded here. Other delicacies include giuncata, ricotta made from sheep's milk, tira, bread dough stuffed with sausage and baked in the oven, and fazzini, pizza dough with tomato sauce, basil and garlic. But the undisputed star of Millesimo is the truffle, which attracts expert truffle hunters to these lands in search of black (or white) gold.
