Ventimiglia town
Ventimiglia town
Along the border with France, Ventimiglia is the city where sea and history coexist, where its modern spirit is interwoven with the medieval and archaeological soul. All along the downtown streets and flanking the promenade that leads towards the French border stand elegant buildings, a shell-shaped harbour and rich Mediterranean vegetation that guide you on a discovery of modern Ventimiglia. Close to the mouth of the Nervia river, there is the opportunity to visit the archaeological area, home to the most important excavation hub in Liguria: the Albintimilium. Heading up the Roia river, rather, you can explore the ancient medieval walls and Romanesque Baptistery.

Hanbury Botanical Gardens
The botanical gardens of Villa Hanbury will take your breath away. Located along the Mortola promontory, they offer splendid views, perfect for admiring the beauty of the Ligurian Sea. Created in 1867 by Sir Thomas Hanbury, these gardens are truly splendid, with eighteen hectares of immeasurable value and beauty. A veritable paradise of flowers and plants, immersed in a unique environment where Mediterranean and tropical plants hailing from all over the world coexist in perfect harmony.
Ventimiglia named the most beautiful square in the upper town after the writer F. Biamonti and his book Vento Largo. The novelist and intellectual was launched by Calvino and was librarian of the historic Aprosiana Library.
The beaches of Ventimiglia
All along the stretch of coast heading towards France, you can find the most splendid beaches in the area, including the Balzi Rossi and Calandre beaches. The Balzi Rossi, also known as the Egg Beach due its oval pebbles is characterised by a sloping and sandy seabed and the splendid Balzi Rossi caves. With its soft and golden sands, the Calandre beach is instead a favourite destination for surfers. The beauty of this coast lies in the hues of its rocks, being almost white in colour in the sunlight, only to disappear into the blue of the sea.
