Winter Plunges in Liguria Between Christmas and The Epiphany

Here are the beaches for the best dives of the season between Christmas, New Year’s, and Epiphany (also after!) to experience the thrill of winter challenges in Liguria.

Cold temperatures? Forget it. The army of ‘challenge enthusiasts,‘ winter bath enthusiasts, is ready to face any situation and dive into the waters of the Ligurian Sea. Give it a try: between fun and sports, jesting and physical well-being, winter bathing has become a tradition between Christmas and the Bufana holiday.

There is no age limit: from the young to the not-so-young, plunging into the icy waves between December and January is a courageous act and an invigorating challenge. A good swim in the clear waters of the Ligurian beaches would not only be a ritual but also an excellent remedy to strengthen the immune system. In Liguria, utility blends with pleasure. And after the plunge, hot tea and chocolate for everyone!

Want to try? For the 2023/24 season, the Nuotatori del Tempo Avverso association, led by Dr. Roberto Giuria, has organised a calendar of winter challenges. There are many locations for the ‘ciumba,’ the plunge, offering plenty of choices. Certainly, as always, besides diving into the sea of Liguria, you can immerse yourself in the places hosting the challenges – villages, streets, squares, museums, events, and flavors to savour that will warm up the competition.
